“Highly recommended. She’s absolutely amazing – one of the best teachers I’ve had at Duke. She cares so much about each student & she’ll go above and beyond to help. It’s really sad how many of the professors here aren’t like her.”
“Great professor, truly one of a kind. The performance was based on 3 papers, which were graded very easily. She also happens to be incredibly hot, which is the only reason I showed up to class. Professors like these are a rarity at Duke, and you would be stupid not to take this class. I would take anything she teaches.”
“The topic is super interesting and useful for real-life purposes. We talk about personal finance and how the top 1% made it to that bracket. She rewards students for showing up to class and grades papers really nicely. Definitely take this class, especially if you’re a senior!”
2. Sandra Valnes Quammen
“She’s super nice and always willing to help if you have any questions. That said, she was definitely a slightly tougher grader than other professors teaching the same course. There is a pretty strong focus on grammar in this course, and that can definitely screw you over if you don’t have a strong background.”
“You have to do your work and you can’t slack off, but if you put forth the effort it’s not a bad class. Her tests, quizzes, etc are all incredibly fair, and you have detailed rubrics for things like writing assignments. She is such a helpful and kind professor; I would definitely recommend taking any course with her!!”
“She is so enthusiastic! She’s very sweet and will always help you out. She is a very good instructor, and I wish I could take her for all of my future French courses. Her tests and quizzes are fair, but you’d need to study to get the grade. Homework can be a bit tedious at times, with some every night. But she would make up for it all.”

“Jay is one of the best professors I have ever had. He makes every second of class enjoyable and you feel like a member of a family by the end. This class taught me things that I will be able to apply every day. You are graded based on your level of participation, attendance, and one critique paper so you really get out of the class whatever you put”
“Super chill guy who’s a friend 1st, professor 2nd. You will actually learn a nontrivial amount of acting, and you’ll get an A/A+ if you put some time into each play. He won’t make you do stuff you’re uncomfortable doing, but he’ll be delighted if you do anyway. There’s a reason why everyone loves him, so don’t miss out on this one.”
“Fantastic professor. Doesn’t care much about what others think, but in a good way where he really makes you think about yourself and your motives for your career and daily life. Very insightful observations on human behavior and how it affects acting. Definitely made me view myself in a different way.”

“This man is one of the kindest people I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with while at Duke. He is a professor who truly, truly cares. A complete people person, optimistic, energetic, and a traveler with interesting stories and a good sense of humor. What a genuinely good teacher, and more importantly, a genuinely good person.”
” I love this guy — you learn how to write like a journalist and think like one — he cares about your learning and is incredibly engaged, you have to take a class with this guy, he’s absolutely the best.”
“Ken Roberson is smart, energetic and cares about his class. He is the kind of professor you come to Duke to meet. FLUNCH him! Weekly quizzes are not too bad, he gives plenty of group assignments to boost your grade. By the end of the semester, you will be a great memo writer and thankful for it. Put in the work and this will be an amazing class.”

“Prof Storer is INCREDIBLE. Strongly recommend taking any class with him. This class was co-taught with Neal Bell and they’re both great, especially together. Jeff gives great feedback on directing, and he’s an inspiring presence in class. His Manbites Dog Theater in Durham is a great place to watch plays, as well.”
“I took the Playmaking class that he co-taught with Neal Bell. It was hands down one of the best classes I’ve taken at Duke. Jeff is an imposing figure, who takes no bull and expects work, but he is a funny dude, his class is fun, and the work never feels like work– I always wanted to go to class. If you can take one of his classes, you MUST do it.”
“My favorite course I’ve taken at Duke so far. There was a consistent, sometimes heavy courseload, but I ended up with a great portfolio to use for future auditions. Storer is clear, engaging, fair, and helpful. He is extremely knowledgeable about acting, auditions, and more than willing to share this expertise with his students. Would take again!”
6. Amy Laura Hall

“Dr. Hall is the BEST professor I have had during my time at Duke. She gives incredible feedback, assigns interesting and approachable texts, and always takes the time to listen to her students. You will not regret taking a class with her. She is a gift to Duke.”
“Professor Hall is one of the most caring professors I’ve ever had. She is genuinely concerned about the wellbeing of her students and is very respectful in class. The topics studied in her Global Health focus class are interesting, and she leads discussion well. Only one close reading paper due per week, and she’s an easy grader.”
“Duke undergrads, don’t let her tenure in the Divinity School scare you: she is not here to preach! Throughout the semester, she fostered thoughtful conversations and a respectful class environment as we discussed a variety of controversial topics in global health. I would take another class of hers no matter what the subject.”

“John is the best, no doubt about it. Engaging and helpful, he is the best professor I’ve had at Duke. He makes you want to learn the ideas and concepts without needlessly fretting about your grade. He has very clear expectations and his class is the most practical and interesting I’ve taken to date. Do everything you can to get into this class.”
“John is THE MAN. Best class I’ve ever taken. You learn so much about markets and without doing an insane amount of work. This class is also very practical as he supplements class lectures with stores from his 30+ year career as a trader at bulge bracket banks. He’s a fantastic person too and truly cares about every student’s success.”
“Fantastic professor. One of the best I had at Duke. Brutally honest, he does not play around. Thought he was a great guy and really cares to get to know his students.”

“Brenna is absolutely amazing. You can tell she really has a passion for the things she is teaching and wants to share that with everyone in the class. Overall, the class is super chill, and she always finds kind things to say about your work while providing helpful feedback. I felt my writing improved a lot. Can’t recommend enough!”
“Brenna has been one of my favorite professors in my time at Duke. She is incredibly giving, caring, and provides a safe and inclusive environment that invites intellectual curiosity and solidarity. Her lectures and the readings gave me a new perspective as to how we view our history and the importance of elevating marginalized voices.”
” If you ever have the opportunity to take a class with Dr. Casey and you don’t… you’ve cheated yourself out of having what would have been the most inspirational class you could’ve taken during your Duke education…”
9. Mainak Patel
MATH353 – Learn More
“Patel was one of the best professors I’ve had at Duke. His explanation of the materials are incredible, and his exams are very do-able if you attend the lecture. His class average for the block final was the same as the average for the whole course though (I felt that his midterms didn’t really prepare students for the final).”
“Amazing professor. Makes material very easy to understand. Especially once we entered PDE’s Patel offered a very easy-to-follow, universal approach to all problems we were responsible for. Gives very fair tests. Big advantage going into the final having been taught by Patel.”
“Dr. Patel is literally the best professor I have had at Duke. He’s a great lecturer who breaks down difficult material into concepts you can understand and is fair on his tests. He also gives you real-life examples to help you understand the material. TAKE HIS CLASS.”
10. John Blackshear

“Dr. Blackshear is awesome. He tells stories of his actual cases as a Forensic Psychologist and is hilarious, extremely intelligent, and accessible. He is so smart and does such incredible work, but is also very relatable. No tests, just 3 essays based on books, movies in class, and in-class notes. Super reasonable workload & incredible experience”
“Lectures were extremely interesting. He has a lot of experience in forensic psychology and interesting stories to complement the cases. Entire grade based on three medium-length papers. One of my favorite classes at Duke and wish I could take it again.”
