Jobs and Opportunities for Students at Boston University

Boston University, often and affectionately known as BU, is located in Boston, Massachusetts. This school is a private non-profit research university, and it attracts students from all over the globe. BU has more than 3,900 faculty members and nearly 33,000 students, making it one of Boston’s largest employers. It offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees, as well as medical, dental, business, and law degrees through 17 schools and colleges. While this school is known for outstanding academics, students flock here, also, for the student jobs and opportunities that await them.

1. WBUR

This is the advertisement for the WBUR station.

WBUR, a department of Boston University and an NPR member station, is a fast-paced public radio station offering interested students with an exciting and creative work environment. They are looking specifically for ambition and dedicated students, and in exchange, they offer generous university benefits, tuition remission and competitive salaries. Students can intern or receive full-paying jobs here, and this is a very sought after position for students interested in a variety of topics. 

2. IT Help Center

Students at all schools may need help figuring out how to work with and manage their technology, and the students at BU provide no exception. This is why the IT Help Center is hiring students nearly year round. Among this department, there are two jobs that students could have. The Service Desk Team takes questions on the phone, via email, or in-person. Such questions may relate to software and hardware issues or even email account questions. In contrast, the Desktop Services team employs students who compliment the Service Desk team with similar support. Further, students in this position may be able to complete software repairs and malware removal.

3. Lifeguard

The student hired for this position is responsible for the safety of all swimmers during recreational swim hours, classes, and special events. Further, it is imperative that he or she is able to enforce rules and provide customer service. It is required that the hired studnet has a current Red Cross lifeguard training and CPR/AED certification. Pay for this position begins at $13.25, making it a lucrative job for any college student.

4. Pilates Instructor

The Boston University Dance Program is looking for certified Pilates Instructors as substitutes for Pilates-based Conditioning and Pilates Apparatus recreational courses, and an instructor for Pilates Apparatus Privates. Students can be certified Pilates Instructors, and that is who preference will be given to during the job search. This position pays between $42 and $45 per hour. 

5. Facilities Supervisor

This is a humorous description for the job offered.

The student who is hired as the Facilities Supervisor must provide exceptional customer service and support the needs of the building and its members. Such responsibilities include troubleshooting and enforcing entry policy, conducting building walk-throughs, and ensuring that rooms are set up and decorated at the right time. In addition, there is significant interaction with FitRec members, guests, and students peers. Overall, the student who is hired must possess strong interpersonal skills, and a willingness to learn and receive constructive feedback. Pay begins at $11.25 per hour. 

6. Marketing Communications Intern

Though many internships simply pay in real-world experience, this internship pays! Student rates are determined based on individual experience with marketing and the technologies used. Essentially, this intern will assist with all aspects of marketing communication including social media contributions, research, newsletter writing, calendar postings, broadcast emails, and dissemination of promotional materials around campus and in the community. Students in this position must have strong writing and interpersonal skills. 

7. Children’s Tennis Instructor

A Tennis Instructors needed for beginning and intermediate children’s tennis classes on weekends throughout the fall and spring semesters. Regarding the minimum requirements, the student who is hired must have at least one year tennis teaching or coaching experience, in addition to experience teaching children in a class or camp setting. Pay for this job ranges between $20 and $25 per hour based on experience.

5 Health and Wellness Services at Boston University

Boston University is a private research university located in Boston, Massachusetts. The university has an assortment of health and wellness services to support the needs of its over 16,000 undergraduates. Students have access to a variety of wellness-related resources related to physical, behavioral, and sexual health. Some of the resources available include Boston University Student Health Services, the Wellness and Prevention Center, and the Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Center. Here are some of the most important health and wellness services available to Boston University students.

1. Boston University Student Health Services

This is an on-campus medical campus available to students for all of their physical and behavioral health needs. It is located in West Campus and is open every day except Sunday. Students can make appointments online and describe what is ailing them in an online form to ensure that they are matched with the right physician for their needs. Students seeking behavioral health services must call to make an appointment, and they will be accommodated with resources like therapy (group or individual), prescriptions for any necessary medications, and any other valuable resources that will help their situation.

2. Wellness and Prevention Center

The Wellness and Prevention Center is located in West Campus at Boston University. Its goal is to help students lead healthy lifestyles and prevent the alternative from happening by educating students on sexual health and providing drugs and alcohol counseling for those who need it. Organizers hold different events to promote wellness on campus throughout the academic year. Mental health resources are also available here.

3. Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Center

Located in West Campus at Boston University, this clinic is intended to support students affected by sexual assault that occurred on or off-campus. Students needing immediate help can call and speak to a crisis counselor  at any time, since SARP is on call 24/7/365. Confidential sessions, both group and individual, are available to affected students as a potential coping device. Counseling is specialized to deal directly with issues faced by victims of sexual assault as they cope with its aftermath.

4. Primary Care

Located within Student Health Services, this should be students’ first stop for any medical concern. This is where students should go in the case of an emergency. Basic reproductive services are also available here, including STI testing. Vaccines are also administered to students here, in an effort to prevent the spread of illness among such a large student population.

5. The Condom Fairy

This is a resource available to students through the Wellness and Prevention Center at Boston University. In an effort to promote safe sexual practices and general reproductive health among its student population, Boston University lets students order condoms online at no charge to them. Packages from the Condom Fairy are discretely delivered to students’ mailboxes within a few days of ordering (packages are unlabeled on the outside). Supplies like lubricants (either flavored or unflavored), dental dams, and more can also be ordered for free. Condom packages contain five condoms each, so plan accordingly. Condoms are of the Trojan brand.

10 Boston University Library Resources You Need to Know

The library can be one of the best academic resources for college students.  Whether you are studying for a test, working on a research project, or meeting with a group of classmates, university libraries have something for everyone!  Students at Boston University are fortunate to have multiple libraries on campus with access to a plethora of resources.  See below for the different libraries and library resources you can find at Boston University.

1.  Interlibrary Loaning Service

If students need an item that is not available at Boston University, they can use the interlibrary loaning service to access books, articles, and other items from various academic libraries.  Students can request items and track their requests online.  In some cases, the item may be available in 1-2 business days.

2.  Research Guides

This resource is extremely helpful to students researching a topic.  Students can search the research guide by subject through the library website and the guide will show students many different resources they can use. The research guide will lead students to articles, journals, books, news and commentary, and citation guidelines for whatever subject they are studying.

3.  Research Help

Undergraduate students can schedule a 30 minute one-on-one appointment or a group research consultation with a librarian.

4.  Writing Help

Students who need extra help with writing can meet with a writing tutor at the library. Weekly help is also available for seniors working on their thesis.

5.  Librarian Contact

Students can use a live chat service on their computer to contact librarians with questions.

There are many ways for BU students to get in touch with a librarian.  Communication methods include a live online chat service, email, phone, in person, through a research appointment, or via text message.

6.  IT Help Center

The IT Help Center is located at Mugar Library.  The center is designed to help students with technology support.  The center is open Monday through Saturday 8 AM to 11 PM and Sunday from 10 AM to 11 PM, providing students with many opportunities to get help with their technology issues.

7.  Printing, Scanning, and Photocopying

These services are available at multiple libraries on campus.  Printing from personal laptops to the library printers is an option.

8.  BU Common

Located at Mugar Library, BU Common is the largest computer lab on campus.  The Common includes almost 200 personal computing stations that include a variety of applications.

9.  Study Spaces at Mugar

Mugar Library offers a variety of study spaces to meet the needs of students.  On the third floor is the PAL Study Lounge which has great views and places for independent or group study.  The basement of Mugar has a study room with a whiteboard wall for students to use as needed.

10.  Course Reading (Reserves)

This service allow faculty to place supplemental class reading assignments on reserve for students.  Whether it is a book or an online resource, students can search course readings online to find a list of materials they need.

Mugar is the main humanities and social sciences library.  This 7-story library has over 2.2 million items.

2.  African Studies Library

This library is located on the 6th floor of the Mugar Library.  The library is designed to support and provide resources for undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research on Africa.

3.  Alumni Medical Library

This center is extremely helpful for researchers, biographers, historians, producers, and students.  It includes many interesting collections such as documents of U.S. presidents and individual letters from monarchs.  The center is home to over 140,000 rare books.

The Music Library is located on the second floor of the Mugar Library.  At this library, students can find scores and media in both physical and electronic formats.  The library provides many services including project help, course reserves, and instructional sessions.

Myles Standish Hall has a capacity of 730 residents and has rooms from the first floor through to the ninth. The hall has single and double rooms in suites. The hall also has a Bike room, air-conditioned rooms, a print station, TV lounges and a study lounge.

The Warren towers has three blocks: Fairfield Tower, Marshall Tower, and Shields Towers which have a capacity of  594, 602, and 601 residents respectively. Residential rooms begin from the fifth through to the eighteenth floor of every tower. The towers have three types of rooms: singles, doubles and quads. Apart from having a mail room, laundry room, bike room, print station, study lounge, TV lounge and a cinema room, the towers also have a late night café.

It has residential rooms from the second to the seventh floor. The rooms are either singles, doubles, and triples and they all have private bathrooms. The house has up to 456 residents.  Beds are space saving loft systems with movable desks and dressers that fit well under the bed. The residence is also equipped with a bike room, TV lounge, print station and many more.
