Joining any sports team or activity will allow students to grow as people both personally and professionally. Students benefit greatly from participating in sports teams. At UCLA, there are a number of sports teams for students to choose from. Here are the top ten sports teams that students can choose from at UCLA.
1. Football Team
The UCLA Bruins football team is coached by Chip Kelly and plays home games at the Rose Bowl Stadium. This team represents the UCLA Bruins in the NCAA Division I FBS level. Students on this team are generally recruited by the coaches the year prior in which they commit to the team during the signing day. Students wishing to be a part of the team can learn more about the recruitment process by contacting the Athletic Office.
2. Track and Field Team
The Track and Field team represents UCLA Bruins in many regional and national meets. They are coached by Avery Anderson. Students who wish to be a part of the team must take part in the recruitment process. Students wishing to be recruited can contact the recruitment questionnaire via the UCLA Athletic website or by contacting the coaches. This will give the coach a chance to evaluate your athletic ability. Be sure to show them that you have the power of running and what skills you have such as long runs or hurdles.
3. Baseball Team
The baseball team is coached by John Savage. This team represents the UCLA Bruins in the NCAA Division I Pac-12 Conference. They play home games at the Jackie Robinson Stadium. Students wishing to be a part of this 35-player team can take part in the walk-on tryouts. Students will need to submit an application, physical, and bring any baseball equipment they will need. This includes a catching glove and a bat.
4. Swimming Team
The swim team meets a number of times throughout the school year. This team represents the UCLA Bruins in many regional, local, and national swimming and diving meets. They are coached by swim coach, Jordan Wolfrum, and dive coach, Tom Stebbins. Students who want to join this team can contact the Athletic Office and the coaches will contact you to directly evaluate your performance. Previous experience is preferred.
5. Men’s and Women’s Basketball Team
The men’s and women’s basketball programs are a part of the NCAA. These programs were established in the early 20th century in which students are now competing on a national level. These two teams are coached by Cori close and Mick Cronin. Students who are wishing to be a part of this team can be recruited as early as their sophomore year of high school. Students must know how to play the game, how to do a number of basketball tasks such as lay-ups or free throws, and of course, you need stamina.
6. Beach Volleyball Team
The Beach Volleyball Team represents the UCLA Bruins in the NCAA tournament for beach volleyball. They are coached by Stein Metzger. Students are generally recruited and can also try out for the team. If you are looking to try out, you must fill out an application and contact the coaches to take part in the recruitment process. Students must know how to hit a volleyball and do a number of different throws and shots.
7. Soccer Team
The men’s soccer team is one of UCLA Bruins’ intercollegiate varsity sports teams. They represent the school as a member of the Pac-12 Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. They are coached by Ryan Jorden. Students wishing to be a part of the team are recruited or can take part in walk-on tryouts in which they will have to show off their stamina and soccer skills to be considered. These tryouts happen during the beginning of the year.
8. Softball Team
The UCLA Bruins softball team is one of the most competitive in the nation. They represent the Bruins in the NCAA Division I softball tournaments. This team is also coached by Kelly Inouye-Perez. Students who are interested in being a part of this team can contact the Athletic Office. Students can take part in the walk-on tryouts at Easton Stadium. All prospective players must know how to bat, how to throw the ball, and have equipment ready for the tryouts.
9. Golf Team
The golf team is coached by Derek Freeman. This team represents the UCLA Bruins at a number of regional, local, and national golfing tournaments. Students who are looking to be a part of this team can contact the Athletic Office and fill out the recruitment questionnaire on the UCLA Athletics website. Students must be able to hit the golf ball in long and short distances.
10. Rowing Team
The rowing team is a variety program that is recognized at the Pac-12 Conference and the ACRA conference. This program is coached by Amy Fuller Kearney. Students wishing to be part of this team must know how to swim to get out of the water, as well as know how to row in a number of conditions in the water as well. Students can participate in a recruitment process in which the coaches will evaluate their performance.
As you can see, UCLA has a number of athletic programs that are designed for just about every student looking to join a team. Joining a team can build character and help any student grow as a person. Just remember, academics come first, which is why it’s called student-athlete!
