Top 10 Sports Teams at UC Davis

The University of California-Davis, is a public research university and land-grant university adjacent to Davis, California. The school has over 29,000 undergraduate students that attend. The students have a variety of different sports to choose from. Here are 10 of the top sports to check out at University of California-Davis.

1. Water Polo

The water polo sport season runs from early September to early December when they compete in the National Collegiate Championship. The coach/director of the team is Daniel Leyson. The team first placed in the NCAA Championship in the year 1996, they placed 3rd. Their record win streak was at an all time high between the time period of September 30th-Nov 4th 2017 with 10 wins.

2. Baseball

The baseball season runs from February to May. The majority of the baseball games are held at Dobbins Stadium. The team competes in the Big West Conference. The team colors are Yale blue and gold. The sport was first founded at the school in 1938. They team made one appearance so far in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship in 2008.

3. Basketball

The basketball season runs from November to March. The team competes in the Big West Conference and in 1998 the team were national champions in the NCAA Division I Championship. The team has a majority of their games at the Pavilion at ARC. The head coach is Jim Les who has been the coach for over 9 seasons.

4. Football

The football season goes from August to November. The team competes in the NCAA Big Sky Conference. The coach is Dan Hawkins and the majority of the games are at the UC Davis Health Stadium. The past conferences the football team has competed in was the Northern California Athletic Conference and the American West Conference.

5. Tennis

The tennis season is from September to April. The team has a majority of their games and practices at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The head coach of team is Eric Steidlmayer. The team competes in the Big West Championship.

6. Golf

The golf season runs from September to May with gaps during the months of November to December . The team competes in the Big West Championship and the NCAA Championship. The head coach is Cy Williams. What makes this sport particularly interesting is how varied the locations are for games, they’ve had competitions in Hawaii, Texas, Wisconsin, etc.

7. Cross Country

The schedule for cross country runs from August to November. The team competes in a number of different invitationals, the Big West Championship and the NCAA Championship. The head coach of the team is Emma Peterson. In January of 2020 the men’s and women’s team were awarded NCAA Academic Team Honors.

8. Soccer

The season runs from August to November. The head coach is Dwayne Shaffer and the associate head coach is Jason Hotaling. In 2018, the team scored 28 goals and had an average of 1.4 goals per game. The team has a majority of their games and practices at the UC Davis Health Stadium.

9. Track and Field

The track and field season runs from March to June. The team competes in the NCAA Championships and the Big West Championships. The head coach of the team is Ngoni Makusha. In July of 2019 there were 66 students that were on the team that were awarded with the title of Big West All-Academic.

10. Equestrian

The season for equestrian runs from September to April with a one month gap in December. The head equestrian coach is Jessie Weisinger. The team competes in the NCEA National Championship and the ECAC Championship. The team practices and has a majority of competitions at the UC Davis Equestrian Center.

The University of California-Davis is a larger sized school when it comes to enrollment. To keep up with the size, the school has a variety of state of the art sports arenas and practice facilities with plenty of different sports to join. The sports teams all perform well in their divisions through the guidance of their coaches and fellow teammates.
