Top 10 Sports at Florida State University

Florida State University is a public space-grant and sea-grant research university in Tallahassee, Florida. The school has over 32,00 undergraduate students that attend the university. To accommodate for the amount of students that attend the college has a wide variety of sports to participate in. Here are the top 10 sports at Florida State University.

1. Baseball

The FSU baseball team competes in NCAA Division I, and the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The head coach of the team is Mike Martin Jr. The team has a majority of the their games at the Dick Howser Stadium. The school’s baseball team was founded in 1948. The team’s schedule runs from February to May.

2. Basketball

The FSU basketball team competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and the Atlantic Coast Conference. Their head coach of the team is Leonard Hamilton. The mascots for the team are named
Osceola and Renegade. A majority of their games are held in the Donald L. Civic Center. The team has their season from October to March.

3. Cross Country

The cross country team has a majority of their competitions at the
Apalachee Regional Park. The cross country team was first founded for the school in the year 1962. The team’s colors is gold and garnet. The team competes in Division I of the NCAA and the Atlantic Coast Conference . Their first appearance in the conference was in the year 1978. The season runs from August to November.

4. Football

The football team competes in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA and the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The football team is coached by Mike Norvell. The team holds walk in tryouts during the month of January. The team has their season from September to November.

5. Golf

The golf team competes in the Division I of the NCAA and the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team has a majority of their games at the
Don A. Veller Seminole Golf Course . The head coach for the team is Trey Jones who has coached for more than 16 seasons. The team’s first NCAA champtionship appearance was in the year 1956. The golf season runs from September to April.

6. Track and Field

The FSU’s track and field sport was first founded in the year 1948. The team’s head coach is Noah Griego who has been the coach for over 14 seasons now. The team made their first win for the conference outdoor championship in the year 1950. The season for track and field is held from January to June.

7. Swimming and Diving

The swimming and diving season runs from September to March. The team practices at the Morcom Aquatics Center. The head coach of the swimming team is Neal Studd and John Proctor is the head diving coach. In the 2018-19 season the team made history by making it to top 10 in the country.

8. Volleyball

The volleyball team has their season from the time period of August to December. The head coach of the team is Chris Poole and Jeff Hulsmeyer is the associate head coach. The team holds a majority of their practices and games at Tully Gymnasium. The gymnasium also hosts plenty of different volleyball camps to improve your skills throughout the year.

9. Beach Volleyball

Beach Volleyball is a sport that is played from February to April. The head coach of the sport is Brooke Niles while Jason Lockhead is the assistant coach. In 2016 the NCAA added beach volleyball as one of the newest sports on its championship roster. In 2019 the team actually finished 6th in the NCAA National championship.

10. Softball

The softball season runs from the months of February to May. The team competes in the NCAA as well as the women’s college world series. The head coach of the team is Lonni Alameda and the assistant coach is Travis Wilson. In 2019 their record game for home was 32-4 and their record away game was 14-6. You can do a walk in tryout for the team during the month of September.

Florida State University with its large amount of students has a wide variety of sports to choose from. The sports have plenty of records of performing well in their tournaments and conferences. The teams all have dedicated coaches and staff that teach students to learn and grow in their sport careers as well as building their teamwork skills.
